Giants lose an ugly one.  Offense, defense, pitching--all bad.  But it's Mother's Day today, time to think of flowers and chocolate and thank you's, so it doesn't take long to review last night's loss and move on to this afternoon's game. A quick review of the pitcher's numbers leads to a discussion of today's odds.  They don't look good, but thanks to a little input from Aidan we are able to mine a Safe Bet of the Day™.  Speaking of mining, today's song of the day is "Diggin' Holes" by Brent Cobb, a catchy little country tune I think you'll like.  Back tomorrow to discuss the upcoming road trip with a first stop in LA to face the Dodgers.

Good morning and welcome back to state at a.m. in the a.m. Your San Francisco Giants pre-game podcast. Bringing you previews, projections, and predictions before every Giants game. Good morning and welcome back into the pod. It is Sunday morning, May 10th, Mother's Day today. A shout out to all the moms out there, especially Clara Lee, the best mom in the world, of course. Make sure and call your mom if that is possible. Tell her how great she is, how thankful you are for all she did over the years. And let's see, we are coming to you today again after another Giants loss. Oh man, what a bad game. Defense was just terrible. It was it just seemed to turn into a comedy after about the fourth inning. The seventh inning looked like a little league game. Throwing the ball around, can't catch it, booting it. Oh man, it was terrible. Terrible. And then the Giants finally learn how to get walks in the bottom of the ninth. This is crazy. Anyway, it was an ugly, ugly game, but at least the safe bet of the day came in, and that turned out to be quite a sweat. If you remember, it was under first five under four, and there were no runs after four innings. And Pittsburgh comes up in the fifth, gets two, Giants get one in the bottom of the fifth, and they had guys on base and looked like they were gonna score, but they didn't. Although we could have used some runs from the Giants, but anyway, the safe bet of the day came in, so we're kind of back on track, almost back to even. That's two in a row now. So let's see, let's move on to today's game. It is Tyler Malley and Bubba Chandler, the 105 start time, and let's look at Tyler Malley first. If you look at his last six games, it is crazy. He has alternated between good games and bad games. He let's see, at five earned runs, then zero, then eight earned runs, then zero, then five earned runs, then zero. So if he keeps alternating like that, he's due for a bad game today. But I don't think that's gonna be the case because so he's had good games and bad games, obviously. But if you look at his home ERA is 2.91, he's had four games at home, three of them have been very good. 2.91, his away ERA is 8.16. So he's had three bad outings, two of those were on the road, only one at home. So that's a good sign. Also, he's had three day games, and he's been a 1.20 ERA in those three games. And today is a home game and a day game, and that's where he's at his that's where he is at his best. So I kind of like his chances today. I think he should at least be decent. Hopefully, he will have one of his better games, his one of his better home games this afternoon, and be able to at least hang with Bubba Chandler. And first of all, the good the good news was coming into this series that we were facing the end of the Pirates' rotation. And I thought we had a chance to maybe take a take a sweep and take advantage of that. But we lost yesterday to Ashcraft looked really good. And again, today the Pirates have another one of their youngsters coming up, a 23-year-old righty. And obviously, he hasn't had much experience. Only one year last year he was up for seven games. He only pitched 31 innings. But in those 31 innings, he had 31 strikeouts up, which was good, four walks, which is good. He went four and one. His ERA was 4.02, which isn't great, kind of average. It's not terrible, but it's certainly serviceable. And that so that's all he had last year. This year he's been up now. He's started in seven games. He's been 34 innings, so almost five innings a game. Not quite as good as last year. 1-4 and 4.76 ERA. He seems to average about five innings a game, gives up about three, four, or five hits. But where he's been having trouble is his walks. He's been given up a lot of walks. 26 walks and 34 innings. That's not very good. In fact, in his last three games, he's pitched 14 innings and given up 13 walks. That's not good at all. Hopefully, you know, the Giants can actually draw a walk today. They started drawing walks last night and they got three walks, two or three walks, and actually scored runs because of that. So hopefully they learned a little lesson. They can get some walks today and continue from last night and capitalize on those walks and turn those into some runs. So that's kind of what I how I'm hoping the game is gonna go. I'm hoping Molly is gonna be serviceable and the Giants will be way more focused in the field and not make all those errors, and it's an afternoon game, they'll be ready to play. And hopefully Bubba Chandler will give up some walks, and then the Giants bats can actually score some runs because of those walks. So that's kind of how I think the game is gonna go today. I think it's gonna be pretty tight through five, and so we'll take all that and get to today's safe bed of the day. So before I do that, I want to say I got a little note from Aiden yesterday about today's game, and so I'm gonna use what he said to end up kind of focusing on this pick I'm gonna make for today. The Giants' money line is minus 115. I would probably stay away from that because, well, I'll explain that later. When I looked at the pitching numbers, which was what I was gonna look at, all the numbers were either too low, the strikeouts for Chandler was three and a half, the hits I think were three and a half, Mallee's numbers were high. I want to say it was five and a half hits, but anyway, the numbers were either too low, or if they weren't, the VIG was too high, and so that kind of left all of those out. At first, I was gonna lean toward the over, but instead of seven and a half, it's eight today. So if they get to eight, you only get a push instead of a win. And so what I'm gonna go with is the Giants' first five money line because I think Mally is gonna have one of his decent games, and I think the Giants are gonna be able to get to this Bubba Chandler guy, get some walks, get some hits, score some runs. And I don't I was gonna take the money line because Aiden thinks, well, I was agree in agreement with Aiden about the last night's game is one of those games that you can flush pretty easily, get over it, and not have not dwell on it like a tough loss. So I think the Giants are gonna come out ready today, but I didn't want to go with the money line because we used so much of our pin last night. I mean, geez, we threw 232 pitches, I think, something like that. Unbelievable number of pitches. And Roop only got through four, and so we had to use our pins so much, they're so taxed. And Pittsburgh's offense looked pretty good against our pin. They were just roping the ball all over the place. So I want to take the bullpins out of it tonight for this game in particular, and then just focus on the first five. So that's why I'm gonna go with today's first five Giants first five money line is minus one eighteen. I'm kind of surprised actually that it's juiced to the Giants' favor, but I guess the books think similar, maybe. But anyway, so that's what we'll take as our official bet of the day today, the safe bet of the day. Giants first five money line at minus 118. And that's gonna take me to the song of the day. And today, when I was Aiden's little note, was something about how the Giants just are always seem to be digging themselves into a hole. Every time they start to climb out of it, they dig right back into it. And that reminded me of a song by a guy named Brent Cobb, C-O-B-B, called Digging Holes. It's a really good one, just a simple little country tune, but it's got, I don't know, a nice little hook to it. I think you'll enjoy it. It's a good one. So go listen to that one. Brent Cobb, digging holes. That's all I have for today. Tune back in tomorrow, where we will recap today's game and go over tomorrow's. The Giants are going to be on the road. They got the Dodgers, then the A's, then Arizona three series on the road. I see tomorrow we have Trevor McDonald back up after that great first start he had, but he will be going against Yashinobu Yamamoto, and he is one of the Dodgers' best, so that should be quite a matchup. So we will look that over tomorrow. Try to dig up another safe bet of the day. With that, have a great Mother's Day today. Stay safe and go, Giants.
